Select the input format of the coordinate you wish to convert using the options listed below. Then, input the coordinate to convert and click the “Convert” button. For more information on the input formats, see below.
Conversion Formats
The input file to upload for conversion must be a simple ASCII text file containing one piece of information in the correct format per line. For example, a file containing easting/northing pairs to convert might look like:
256000,665000 412300,140000 540000,320000If you select to output a CSV file, the file returned to you will be a semi-colon delimited CSV file containing the columns of your original data, NGR8, Easting, Northing, decimal Lat/Long, 1km OS Map Square, 10km OS Map Square, 500m OS Map Square and Streetmap URL. This file can be imported into any CSV-supporting program such as Excel, Access or AutoRoute.
If you select to output a GarTrip .txt file, the file generated will be suitable for loading into any Garmin GPS device supported by GarTrip under the OSGB datum. GarTrip is downloadable from here.
The input formats are as follows:
- NGR8
The input format of NGR8 data should be XX DDDD DDDD where XX is the 100×100km map square within which the coordinate lies. The actual coordinate within that square can be expressed as a four, six or eight digit number. For example, NS 5534 6590, NS 553 659 or NS 55 65.
- Easting/Northing
Easting/northing values are input as a pair of comma-separated numbers. For example, 256000, 665000.
- Lat/Long (dec)
Latitude/longitude values should be input in a decimal format, as a comma-separated pair of two floating-point numbers. For example, 55.85668, -4.3008.
- 500, 1km, 10km OS Map Square
These input formats are a single string of characters and numbers which denote a specific Ordnance Survey map square. The organisation of these squares is a bit too complex to go into here. Typical input values are in the form of NS56NE20 (500m), NS56NE20 (1km) and NS56 (10km). These squares correspond to the filenames used on the Streetmap site, for example.
